Mixed Beach Volleyball Tournament 2011

On 18 February at the Adelaide CityBeach volleyball venue (surely unique, with a prime CBD location), 16 teams fought out a keenly contested tournament, with the main emphasis on fun, participation and raising money for a very worthy cause.

Although the weather was not ideal (in fact it was lousy, with the average February rainfall falling during the night), most teams managed to front.  Participating teams included Acciona, APP, Arup, Aurecon, Built Environs, Deloittes, GHD, KBR, Leed Engineering, Parsons Brinkerhoff, SA Water, United Water, and Worley Parsons.  However, the weather kept a few teams away, and necessitated a reshuffle of pool numbers.

The evening started with a demonstration match between AIS athletes, followed by a short coaching session.

There were 4 pools of 4 teams, with the top 2 from each group going through to the quarter finals.

A BBQ was held mid round, during which a series of fun games took place trying to hit areas close to prizes (which contributed to the fundraising coffers, along with a raffle for a dozen fine wines).

The semi-finals took place immediately after the quarters under floodlights, and 2 very keenly fought matches saw SA Water Sludgepots triumph over United Water, and GHD triumph over Built Environs (in sudden death 32 – 30 points).

The final took place after a 10 minute break, to allow some breathing space, with GHD taking on the plucky Sludgepots, and registering a win in a relatively rain free atmosphere.

Overall $ 4,840 was raised for WaterAid.

Photos and team results to be published soon.

South Australian WaterAid Gala Dinner 2010

Attracting a record 1063 guests, the event raised than $272,500 for the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest people. A fantastic night was had by all. The night started with a grazing entree of 7 different foods in a room themed as a Brazilian Market.. The crowd was entertained by a very vibrant Brazilian band who ushered in the La Bomba dancers followed by the Bollywood Dancers. A very loud and colourful start to a great night. The good food and wine, which was all sourced locally was enjoyed by all before we finished off with a Latino Band. “Latino Grooves”.

WaterAid Quiz Night 2010

We had 22 tables at this year’s quiz night, making it one of the largest attendances we have had to date. The night raised an amasing $7355.90.  The host for the night was Tim Noonan and he led a lively debate on many of the answers. The committee supplied pizza and the drinks flowed making it a very enthusiastic night. During a short break, homemade cakes and biscuits finished the evening off. The annual trophy was hotly contested, with the eventual winners being the Parsons Brinkerhoff team. The evening was a huge success.

WaterAid Quiz Night 2009

The Quiz Night was held in June at SA Water House and raised just over $5000.00.  Tim Noonan was the MC for the evening and created a lot of laughs. The raffle prize was 2 tickets for the WaterAid Gala Dinner and these were hotly contested as with everyone buying loads of tickets hoping to be the lucky recipient.  Prizes for the winners were minor but the competitors didn’t play for sheep stations. A fun night was had by all.

Womadelaide 2009

WaterAid makes it presence felt during the Womadelaide Event. WaterAid uses this opportunity to raise awareness of the charity. Volunteers make themselves available to discuss the charity or how one can donate. Videos show the work in countries where we are operating and how fresh water  makes a difference to the lives of the villagers.  Whilst we don’t usually see this is a fundraiser we made a small amount selling some rings and Tais that had been brought over from East Timor.

WaterAid Golf Day 2009

November 27 in Adelaide proved to be a day of 5 seasons, hot and humid from 9:30 in the morning as 14 volunteers prepared for the day’s proceedings. Then it came in cool andcloudy with increasing winds as the players rolled up at 11am to register for the day. Play gotunder way with the wind increasing and cooling down quickly, and by the 4th hole it started drizzling, by the 10th hole it was raining with some thunder in the distance – then play was called off on the 12th hole because the lightning was very close. After 40 minutes waiting for the small front to pass, about half the teams ventured back out to reach the 18th – but after 16 holes it started raining and hailing, and with the threat of lightning too great, club management called off the game.

Unfortunately the result was that many players packed up and left early, leaving about 80 people sitting down for the dinner and presentation. Executive Director of WaterAid South Australia John Ringham thanked sponsors, players, the volunteers and the Vines Golf Club for the day and generosity.
